PUBG Announces $150K North American Qualifier Tournament
Last month, PUBG Corp announced the game’s first worldwide esports tournament for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the PUBG Global Invitational 2018. This week, the company announced plans to host a qualifier for the Invitational in North America with its prize pool of $150,000.
The North America qualifier is the first of several expected to be announced for the PGI 2018 in different regions around the world. The tournament will include roughly 320 from the United States, Canada, and Mexico, split into 16 lobbies of 20 teams each.
Teams can begin signing up for the North America qualifier today, and events kick off on May 24. The tournament is expected to reach round three on May 26, and the top 20 teams make it in the money. Those top 20 will then go on to a finals round to be held June 22-24 in Burbank, California.
The top three teams to emerge from the finals will all receive invitations to the PGI 2018 in Berlin. Those who make it to the Global Invitational in Berlin will have the chance to compete for a share of a $2 million prize pool.
When the PUBG first announced the Global Invitational last month, they said there would be regional qualifiers leading up to the event but did not indicate that the qualifiers would each post prize money. Competition is getting fierce among Battle Royale titles. This offer could give the game the edge it needs to attract players away from the current leader in player numbers, Fortnite.
