Pro-Fortnite Team Secret Signs 13-Year Old
Most esports professionals get their start in their teens, but few are as young as Kyle “Mongraal” Jackson of the United Kingdom. Mongraal was signed by Team Secret, the same team that fields a top-performing professional Dota 2 squad, to play on their newly-created Fortnite team.
In an interview with ESPN, Team Secret CEO John Yao claimed he had no idea how old Mongraal was until the other members of the team informed him. Yao came across Mongraal in his search for Fortnite talent, and says he appeared the same age as all the other guys in his videos. Yao described the 13-year-old as mature.
Signing Mongraal is not just a bid for attention. Team Secret conducted extensive scouting throughout Europe and North America for the best players, hoping to get a leg-up on other teams who are soon to do the same. Their search resulted in a squad of four, for the moment, which includes two players from Norway and another from Latvia.
The young player has time to mature even more before he begins his professional career. Fortnite has yet to launch a professional league. For now, Mongraal will earn money just to play the game he already loves, becoming more awesome at it than he already was.
Mongraal says he got his start at nine years old playing Call of Duty and only started playing Fortnite last fall. He had to get his parents’ consent to join Team Secret, which Mongraal says was not a problem. He says his parents talked it through with him and are very supportive.
