North American Overwatch Contenders Playoffs Begin This Weekend
Overwatch Contenders is approaching its first seasonal playoffs. The semi-professional esports league has concluded its inaugural 2018 regular seasons in North America and Europe and both regions are preparing to launch their playoffs. The North American playoffs begin this weekend, on April 15.
It all starts on Sunday with Toronto Esports (Boston Uprising) vs. NRG (San Francisco Shock), followed by Envision Esports vs. XL2 Academy (New York Excelsior). Yeon-Oh “Fl0w3r” Hwang, the Korean player who wowed crowds at the 2017 Overwatch World Cup, plays for XL2 and is expected to bring a few highlights to the evening.
The playoff action then resumes on Tuesday with Fusion University (Philadelphia Fusion) vs. Mayhem Academy (Florida Mayhem. Fans are excited to see the action of Fusion University players Seung-Jun “WhoRU” Lee and Kyung-Bo “Alarm” Kim, who both hail from the pre-Contenders team Lunatic-Hai.
The North American playoffs conclude with the Gladiators Legion (LA Gladiators) vs. OpTic Academy (Houston Outlaws).
The European region playoffs begin the following week on April 22 with the British Hurricane (London Spitfire) vs. Young and Beautiful, followed by CIS Hope vs. Orgless and Hungry. British Hurricane enters the playoffs with an impressive 4-1 match record – the best in the league aside from Eagle Gaming, who are the only team to score a perfect 5-0 record.
Both the North American and European Overwatch Contenders playoffs will be viewable on the league’s official Twitch channel. The top team from either region will win $30,000, though all teams in the league receive money regardless of their results.
