Oil & Gas Texas holds annual poker tournament
Houston-area heavies recently got together for a poker fundraiser benefiting Houston schools. The 13th annual Oil & Gas Texas Hold’Em Tournament attracted a lot of attention and saw $1.3 million raised for YES Prep, a group of 17 schools. The event was held at The Corinthian late last week.
Before players had a chance to crack their knuckles and warm up their seats for the 13th annual event, local corporations and individuals had already donated $850,000 to the schools. After the cards were shuffled, another $450,000 was raised. In total, 500 players gathered for the annual event, all from the oil and gas industries around the country. In the end, Rick White, playing at the Merrill Lynch table, took home the top prize.
YES Prep is an open-enrollment public charter school system that covers grades six through twelve. It focuses primarily on underserved communities around the Houston area, and currently has more than 12,600 students. YES opened in 1998 and provided rigorous curriculums that outpace that of standard public schools not only in Houston but around the country. The charter schools have received numerous awards for their teachings, including being listed in the Top 100 High Schools in the Nation by US News and World Report, as well as the National Blue Ribbon by the US Department of Education.
