PUBG Grosses Over $700M in First-Year Sales
Player Unknown’s Battle Ground grossed $714 million in its first year in the market. The game was the overwhelming hit release of the year, but its stellar sales were still not enough to beat the long-standing revenue leader, League of Legends, which grossed a staggering $2.1 billion in revenue last year.
The market research firm SuperData released a report on video games and esports in 2017 this week. Their “2017 Digital Games & Interactive Media Year in Review” provides a look at growth in the industry, as well as predictions for growth in gaming through 2018.
According to the report, the second-highest grossing premium PC game, Overwatch, didn’t come anywhere close to PUBG at $482 million. The overall gaming industry added up to more than $100 billion in 2017, and PC games were not the biggest earners.
Mobile gaming shot to the top of the charts last year with $55 billion in revenue, downgrading PC to second place with $33 billion in revenue. The top grossing mobile game was Arena of Valor, which brought in $1.9 billion in revenue. The mobile market is dominated by Asian publishers, with top grossing games featuring mythological themes from Chinese culture.
When it comes to the most-watched games, League of Legends and PubG were at the top of the charts. League of Legends is still the leader, for now, with a total of 157 million unique monthly viewers on Twitch. The game’s massive global following helped keep Amazon’s streaming site at the top of its game, holding down over 50 percent of the gaming video content market.
