WPT Ends Season XV With Florida Finale
By Bob Garcia
The World Poker Tour is about to kick off its Season XV finale in Florida. Three massive events are lined up back-to-back-to-back at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. It all starts today, March 31, with the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown.
Last year the WPT launched a new form for their season finale. It included three tournaments, the SHRP Showdown, followed by the SHRP Finale, then the Tournament of Champions, which averaged out to success.
This year they are hoping to build on that success, repeating what worked well and upping the promotion for their newest tournament, the WPT Tournament of Champions.
Last year’s inaugural Tournament of Champions, which replaced the WPT World Championship, attracted just 64 players. The tournament was limited to just previous WPT event winners, as it is again this year, and many in that relatively small pool were turned off by a $15,000 buy-in to play against the toughest of odds – fellow winners.
To help fill the tables the Tournament of Champions will be a little different this year. At least 19 players will have guaranteed entry, with 227 past champions reserving the option to pay the $15,000 buy-in. Will this work out to a larger field? We will know by the time the tournament kicks off on April 7.
Between now and then there are two major events open for entry. Last year’s $3,500 SHRP Showdown attracted 1,222 entries. The SHRP Finale was also considered a success with 342 players paying the $10,000 buy-in.
