Will the Dream Come True for Tyler from Missouri?

Will the Dream Come True for Tyler from Missouri?
by: Larry Colcy

I met an interesting character yesterday: Tyler, from Missouri.  If ever I met someone that’s living the dream, it’s Tyler. He won his way to the Caribbean in an online tournament at Americas Cardroom, the biggest US poker room, and he’s making the most of it.

He’s only ever played online – never been to an action packed live tournament like the Punta Cana Poker Classic. In fact, he’d never even been on a plane before!

“I was pretty nervous about the whole trip,” he told me outside the tournament hall where Day 1b of the $500K Main Event was in progress.  “Before I bought my plane ticket I messaged them and asked them ‘hey, did that hurricane hit there or what?’ They said no so I figgered, what the heck and booked my flight!”

“Now here I am with more than 71,000 chips going into Day 2 – I think I’m in the top twenty so far. So I’m feeling pretty good about now!”

Last year the winner of the tournament pocketed over $185,000 of the $500,000 prize pool. Like many players, Tyler has already thought about what he’ll do if he wins that kind of money down here.

“If I just place, that’s good enough for me.  But if I win I guess I’ll buy some stuff for my car,” said Tyler.  “Folks back home won’t be surprised to hear that!  I guess I’d invest a lot of it – and set some aside to go to the WSOP and try my luck in Las Vegas!”

For a young guy who’s never played such a big poker tournament, the big money and generally high calibre of players at the Punta Cana Poker Classic can be a bit intimidating – but he’s coping just fine.

“I was pretty nervous at first,” he said. “I was playing really tight. After awhile I started opening up. My image made everyone think I must have something, so I was winning most of the pots.”

Being one of the youngest players in the tournament can be daunting.

“I guess if I start to feel too intimidated I’ll just put on my sunglasses,” he laughed.

“This next day could be a little difficult, since the antes and the big blinds… But as long as I play good – not too tight and not too aggressive – I should be fine.

I flopped a straight on the flop yesterday. Then the river gave a possible higher straight so I played it safe and checked it to the other person. He checked and I showed him my straight and I won it! I don’t like gambling – I like playing good, trying to not lose!”

Good luck Tyler! Hope your dream comes true!
