Michael Phelps Played Pineapple Open-Face Chinese Poker On His Phone Just Before Olympic Race
By Bob Garcia
Swimming legend Michael Phelps has more Olympic medals than anyone else in history and has returned home from Rio this summer adding five more golds and one silver to his already unbeatable-for-several-lifetimes tally. But did you know that Phelps is also a pretty good poker player as well?
In a recent photograph taken just before the 200m butterfly-stroke semi final, Phelps was pictured on his phone playing "pineapple", an online card game for mobile use only based on a form of open faced Chinese poker. The game is popular with poker pros as a way to keep their hand in while on their cell phones. The race in question that that Phelps was waiting for while playing pineapple, was one where he ended up coming second in, although he ended up qualifying for the final which he went on to ultimately win the gold in.
Phelps has appeared at the WSOP in recent years and takes his poker playing pretty seriously, and now that he has retired from swimming he has the time, if he wants, to turn his poker activities up a notch or two. According to his profile on the Hendon Mob database – yes, like all serious poker players, he has one – Phelps has notched up almost $7,000 in live poker tournament earnings so far.
If he turns out to be as good a poker player as he was a swimmer, expect that amount to rise.
